We all know the saying “A man’s home is his castle”. Today I’d like to talk about our homes . Not real estate and the mortgage crisis, but places we leave in the morning and come back to in the evening, places where we spend time free from work, where we read on the rainy day and experiment with the cooking methods, places we proudly call our homes. These are usually the places, which we try to keep comfortable, inviting and useful, where we keep our photo albums and the CD collection, our IRS records and favorite books, places we count being our sanctuary, places, where we live with our kids and pets, the places we protect.
With the holiday season coming up we invite guests, we light up candles, we visit friends, we leave home more often for a few hours or for a few weeks. What if something happens while we are out?
If you own a house, you have a homeowner insurance. Read it. You might find out, that your policy is not what you expected it to be. Call your agent and ask questions.
What if you live in the rented apartment or house? What will you do, if the place gets robbed or your neighbor leaves the stove unattended and your apartment becomes a wreck, including the furniture, ruined by the team of the firefighters and the art collection, covered with a soot?
Your answer is: rental insurance.
Here are the quotes from the article I read the other day in San Francisco Chronicle: “The problem is that most people don’t have it, and they don’t know how exposed they are,” said Michael Finney of “ABC-7 On Your Side.” “If you’re a working adult, it’s probably something you should have.”
“…most don’t realize that renters insurance will come into play in other instances as well - if someone steals something from their car, or out of their hotel room while vacationing in Bangladesh, or even from their son or daughter’s college dorm room.
Renters insurance also protects policyholders from liability: If someone slips on a wet kitchen floor during a party, the dog bites a neighbor or a passer-by trips over a hose left on the sidewalk and sues, the policyholder is covered up to the limits of the policy. One major carrier’s basic policy offers $100,000 of liability coverage. Additional liability coverage is available.
“There is usually a limited amount of medical coverage included in a renters insurance policy as well. If a guest cuts her finger preparing food, needs medical care and doesn’t have insurance of her own, renters insurance will pay - usually from $1,000 up to $5,000 - for treatment.”
“While the cost of renters insurance is determined by a number of factors, including ZIP code, safety features such as sprinklers and security system, as well as size of the apartment, an average policy offers about $25,000 worth of coverage on personal possessions and costs about $200 to $300 a year.”
Those are just a few answers to your questions.
