If you’ve decided on getting a piece of an art as a gift, consider the following:
Is a recipient a minimalist with bare walls and just enough things to get by comfortably, clean and organized and probably already have everything, he/she needs?
Then, don’t clutter their life unnecessarily. First of all, think of the hobbies and interests of the person. Is it art as an art, or motorcycles, or designer’s clothes, or computer’s related, gardening, cooking, an architectural wonders, a new novel, knitting, painting or something else?
Your best choice would probably be a great coffee table book, such as a Gustav’s Klimt paintings (read the reviews on this and similar items and you’ll get the feel of it)
Or the life and creations of Coco Chanel, or the Dali’s or impressionists’ paintings:

Calendar at amazon.com
Consider a calendar with Dali’s illustrations, also check out the book (or a calendar) on Escher’s work:

If you or your friends like cats, check “Why cats paint” book (51 reviews on Amazon.com). Imagine, cats painting! See pictures, read stories!

These books are great conversation pieces. The idea is to get a great illustration book (doesn’t take much space) pertaining to the interests or a hobby of the recipient. Chances are, they’ll keep it, whether for the inspiration, motivation, sharing or simply to admire.
If you are set on getting a painting or a poster, make sure the size of it is not overpowering for the person’s home. Sometimes, getting a set of 3 or 4 small (preferably same themed) paintings could present a better solution.
